High Cortisol Symptoms/PTSD, Part 2

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder -- PTSD -- High Cortisol and How To Heal From It by Eileen Nauman, DHM (UK), medical astrologer

        PART 2-- The Astrology behind PTSD/High Cortisol and How do we get PTSD/high cortisol?

Here is an illustration showing the adrenal glands that sit on top of each kidney.  When cortisol is within normal limits, the Adrenals "talk" to the Pituitary gland.  Between the two, cortisol is kept within normal levels.  However, when PTSD occurs, over time, the Pituitary is knocked out of the picture and the consequence is high cortisol without any controls.  It remains high in our bloodstream forever--unless something is done to bring it back into normal operating levels.  The good news is that can be done.  See Blog #3 to be released on 11.30.09

THE ASTROLOGY SIGNATURE OF PTSD and High Cortisol Level

    Astrologically, PTSD has some familiar planetary players.  Mars symbolizes the violence aspect.  And Mars rules the Adrenal glands.  Uranus for the shock/trauma experienced that may remain in the body a lifetime.   Neptune causes the person to go into addictions to escape the high cortisol symptoms, usually via drugs and/or alcohol.

    Mars rules the Adrenal glands.  It is our “fight or flight” glands that sit atop our kidneys.  When we feel threatened, unsafe, cortisol is the first thing to shoot into our blood stream.  Then, if we feel violence is going to happen, here comes the adrenaline.  When the threat or sense of unsafeness is no longer there, the adrenals stop putting them out into the bloodstream and things and your sense of safety returns to normal.  You now feel safe and unthreatened.

    Pluto is another big player in PTSD because it rules over the endocrine system in general. With PTSD and high cortisol you are looking at the adrenal glands as the primary reason and the cascade effect on the thyroid secondarily.   The thyroid is ruled by Mercury and Taurus.    Pluto is also is the keeper of the contents of our Unconscious where the original PTSD symptoms lurk and control us via the high cortisol levels.

     The Moon, by far, is the key player for potential PTSD/high cortisol situation.   The Moon is the seat of our emotions.  When our emotions are abused/shocked/traumatized either for a short period or a long time, damage is done.  It is the Moon that must deal with all our emotions, including those of fear, threat and possible death by violence--all PTSD triggers.    A Moon with three or more hard aspects, especially with any of the above, may make you sensitive to PTSD symptoms more than most.  And if you find yourself with any of the high cortisol symptoms outline in Blog #1 on 11.28.09, then you should be further tested.

    Tragically, a  Moon with many hard aspects potentially indicates a person who grew up in a dysfunctional family where they never felt “safe.”  The more hard aspects, the more unsafe the person felt in their growing up years.  If you find a Moon with Mars, Uranus or Pluto in hard aspect, then there is every chance this person not only suffered from mental and emotional abuse, but physical abuse as well.

    Pay attention to Chiron, the ‘wounded healer.’  You will often find the natal Chiron playing a direct part in the accumulated PTSD symptoms.  These are the players in PTSD from my experience.

    House-wise, the terminal houses of the fourth, eighth and twelfth are also indicators of PTSD.  If you find planets in any of these houses with hard aspect, then suspect it.

    Another way to look at how a person grew up and what their childhood was like is to look at the sign on the cusp of the fourth house.  Then, look at the planetary ruler and see how many hard aspects it has.  If there are three or more, you can suspect some kind or type of abuse that was doled out on this person as a child.  Let me give you an example from my own chart.  I have 26 Scorpio on the 4th house cusp.  Pluto is the “new” ruler and Mars is the “old” ruler.  Looking at Pluto, it is in my 12th house of hidden secrets.  Pluto is inconjunct my Moon.  Pluto is also conjunct my Mars.  And Mars is inconjunct my Moon.  There are two YODS that are formed with these two:

            Pluto sextile Neptune inconjunct Moon
            Mars sextile Jupiter inconjunct Moon

    These aspects alone, without the YOD being involved, is enough to make them ‘players’ in suspected abuse in the home (4th house).  To add to this, the Moon has a square to my Sun.  Moon is inconjunct Mars, inconjunct Jupiter.   Chiron is conjunct Jupiter.  Moon is square Uranus.  In all, there are six hard aspects to the Moon, alone.  Again, this is to give anyone pause and make them wonder if this person wasn’t terribly traumatized.  When you add up the damage by planets:  Moon, Uranus, Pluto, Mars, Neptune and Jupiter, you have all the necessary PTSD signature to know there’s an awfully good chance that this person has PTSD.  The only thing to do is to verify it via the symptoms in Blog #1.

    And I can verify I grew up in a violent, abusive home.  I’m lucky to be alive.  And there was abuse on every level.  What is more important is to realize that there can be what I term ‘mild’ abuse in the home and nowhere near the level that I survived, and it will STILL create PTSD symptoms in a person.  For some individuals, whose spirit is not strong, a “little” abuse, a “little” trauma is as powerful and devastating as it is for someone else.

    We can’t minimize or judge the home environment and its result on another person.  What we can do is see HOW BADLY DAMAGED they are by it.  The body remembers.  Our cells remember everything, good and bad, that happens to us.  The body has memory.  And so, by taking out that list of cortisol symptoms, you can ask your relative, friend or client about these symptoms.  If they fit two or three of them, then they should contact a Functional Medicine doctor for further evaluation and testing (saliva/blood) which I’ll talk more about in another blog.

    Continuing our discussion of Terminal houses, the eighth house represents power OVER us by someone else.  If there is a planet(s) in the 8th house with hard aspects, then that child can feel lorded over and abused by an adult or older child.  Sexual predators are in the 8th house, as well, and it’s not uncommon to see a child sexually abused with planets in here with hard aspects.

    The Twelfth house holds a lot of secrets; mostly skeletons in our family closet or from our own poor choices living life.  Planets here in hard aspect can indicate toxic family secrets of all kinds.  It can also mean the perpetrator gets away his his or her abuse of the  victim.  If a person has planets in this location in hard aspect, they may or may not remember the abuse done to them.   The brain has a ‘fail-safe’ mechanism that  shields us from trauma so horrifying that if we could remember it, it would probably destroy us either mentally or emotionally--or both.  Therefore, these people  may NEVER remember what was done to them.  But their body will. And the way you tell that is when they test for high cortisol.  The body ALWAYS remembers even if we don’t.  And if you ask a person about possible trauma or abuse and they don’t remember, don’t take their word for it. Suggest the lab tests that I’ll share with you in another blog.

                HOW DO YOU GET PTSD?

1.  It can be a sudden, unexpected stress.  For example, you see or survive an automobile or a train wreck, you live through an earthquake, you see a plane crash (or you survive one), you live through a flood, or some other kind of natural disaster, such as a tornado or hurricane.  An explosion can cause it.  Being involved in a fire, or seeing one wreak havoc, can also trigger this cascade of symptoms.  The attack on the Pentagon and World Trade Centers is ripe for PTSD symptoms, as was the destruction of the Twin Trade towers on 9.11-- for not only those caught in this horrible holocaust, but those who viewed it on television or heard it on radio not only in the USA--but around the world.  So, you don’t need to have been there to “get” PTSD symptoms.  We are all vulnerable to such global trauma.  The death of a loved one (parent, child, grandparent, uncle, aunt, good friend, ect) can also trigger PTSD.

2.  Men or women who have 'gone to war'--whether in armed combat, or the 'war' on the streets as a police person, firefighter, paramedic, ambulance attendant, gang-banging, or the war in a dysfunctional family,  all qualify.  The Gulf War vets, the Iraq and Afghanistan vets as well as the Vietnam vets, have earned their PTSD symptoms from encountering the gory, super-stressful, bloody horror of war--up front and close.  Their lives may have been threatened.  Maybe not.  Just living in a war zone is enough to trigger PTSD in some people.  Terrorist attacks can create it.  Living in a 'war-zone' neighborhood, or the inner city, will trigger these symptoms.   Places such as Yugoslavia, now carved up into fiefdom, is another good example--all people of that area have suffered some form and exposure to PTSD.  Israel is under constant threat of attack and I'm sure many of them suffer from these symptoms.

3.  If the person is exposed to inhumane treatment--and this includes verbal or physical abuse (spousal), incest or rape or actually being a POW, prisoner-of-war, PTSD symptoms will manifest.  Torture comes in many forms.  If one lives eighteen years in a dysfunctional family, that is a special hell and torture in its own right.  One doesn't need to be put in a cage somewhere in Vietnam to garner the same PTSD symptoms.  The cage for the trapped child is just as real because their is no escape for eighteen years.  Either environment will create them.  If an individual views atrocity, that can trigger symptoms.

     Again, it doesn't have to be in a war zone or in combat--it can be at a train wreck, an airplane disaster, a terrorist attack.  As an example, the Oklahoma City bombing has, quite literally, created a city of PTSD survivors.   Many police and firefighters view human remains at accident sites all the time--and never received help for what they view.   Some did, fortunately--but others did not.   Human or animal atrocity affects all of us.  The question is just how much.  At some point, we all have an inner boundary where inhumane treatment, torture or atrocity, will affect all of us.

    Now, the latest trauma, the terrorist attacks on our Pentagon and the destruction of the World Trade Centers in New York City have, once again, created a massive PTSD epidemic in the wake of these assaults on our collective, USA psyche.  Bosnia has been traumatized.  Right now, it is Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention, Iran and Pakistan.  Violence against anyone breeds PTSD.

4.  The psychological and constitutional elements of ourselves, which is known collectively to the homeopath as the "vital force"  will create more or less susceptibility to PTSD symptoms.  Ten people can view a plane crash.  There will be ten different, varying levels of reaction to it.  Those whose vital forces are more susceptible to this type of trauma, will be more profoundly affected and they will be the ones coming away with PTSD symptoms and high cortisol levels.  Others may be less affected or not at all.  Four children in an abusive household will have four different coping mechanisms and reactions to the war-zone environment and each vital force will respond a little differently to it--but they will all walk away wounded with PTSD.  It's just a question of how much damage has been done and where.  Some people's psyche/vital force, are more resilient than others.  However, the more long-term the 'war zone' that is encountered, the more sure you are that they will all be effected.  It's just a question of how much, at that point.

5.  Any of the above situations combined with physical abuse or bodily injury will cause PTSD.  Injury, particularly to the head region, will guarantee it.  Homes where children are slapped, beaten, thrown around, will have a high degree of PTSD symptoms unless they have a very tough, strong vital force.  And even then, they will still be wounded; but perhaps not as deeply as some other individuals who are more susceptible to such a combative environment.

6.  PTSD symptoms can worsen especially if there is no social net or fabric in which to seek help or protection from this warlike environment or warlike person.  Without an abuse shelter being available, without the means to talk to someone who recognizes the bottom line of the problem, survivors, if left in such an environment, simply become worse over time.  A military vet who cannot seek help, is left to suffer in his or her personal hell that only deepens and stains their entire life, year by year.  PTSD symptoms, if not caught and reversed, only become worse with time.  It ruins marriages, children, and stains the PTSD survivor irrevocably.  In a sense a PTSD survivor is still in their POW cage--it just isn't visible, but it's there in the guise of high cortisol symptoms (Blog #1, 11.28.09).

                THE THYROID IMPLICATION

    There is synergy between cortisol and thyroid hormones.  Both have to be in our cells, bound to their respective receptors at normal levels in order to work efficiently.  If cortisol levels are low, caused by Adrenal exhaustion, our thyroid is less efficient at doing its job of increasing our energy and metabolic activity.  The person may end up with hypothyroid symptoms and unwanted weight gain.

    When your cortisol is too high, it interferes with the thyroid hormone signal.  In essence, it creates what is known as ‘thyroid resistance.’  This means the thyroid hormones levels can be ‘normal’ in a test, but our cell tissues fail to respond as efficiently to the thyroid signal.    This too can be misdiagnosed as hypothyroidism.  Throwing thyroid supplements at it won’t fix it, either.  Why? Because the foundational problem is the high cortisol.  You bring the cortisol within normal operation and the hypothyroid symptoms go away and your thyroid is able to function fully and normally once more.

    Signs of hypothyroid symptoms are:

    *  Fatigue
    * Weakness
    * Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
    * Coarse, dry hair
    * Dry, rough pale skin
    * Hair loss
    * Cold intolerance (you can't tolerate cold temperatures like those around you)
    * Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
    * Constipation
    * Depression
    * Irritability
    * Memory loss
    * Abnormal menstrual cycles
    * Decreased libido, low or no sex drive

                             INSULIN RESISTANCE

    High cortisol also causes insulin resistance as well.  It takes more insulin to drive glucose into the cells when coritsol is high.  And so you have a high coritsol and insulin and this creates the ‘insulin resistance.’  You are going to gain weight around the waist because our body stores fat there, rather than burning it off like it should.  This is the “apple” body shape.

                PERI-MENOPAUSE AND MENOPAUSE

    When cortisol is high, our brain is less sensitive to estrogens.  This can throw women into “early” menopause.  It can also amp up hot flashes and night flashes....which are not only bothersome but at night, when we’re trying to sleep--we are constantly be awakened.  The sleep deprivation from this one symptom alone will put any woman into a tailspin over time.  In peri-menopausal women  cortisol should drop at night.  Progesterone plays an important role here because it actually competes with cortisol for the glucocorticoid receptors.  It can counter the stimulating (wide awake vs sleeping) effects of cortisol at night when you need to be sleeping deeply and soundly.  With high cortisol, the progesterone is shoved aside and loses out.  The result is insomnia for the woman.

      You can have post menopausal women with reasonable amounts of estrogen but when the cortisol rises, she will get hot flashes--which are seen by the medical establishment as an estrogen deficiency.  In this case, it’s not a deficiency.  It’s the cortisol interfering in the process.  If the cortisol levels are brought down to normal, the hot flashes end once and for all.  And if your doctor misdiagnosis your hot flash symptoms, he or she will give you other hormones to compensate--and they won’t work.  Be sure, if you are past menopause, and continue to have hot flashes, to get your cortisol levels checked first (Part 3 will have information on who to contact and what tests to get) before taking any other hormones.

                        BONE LOSS

    There’s real problems with bone loss (spinal shrinkage among them) when cortisol is high.  It activates many of the biochemical pathways that are involved with bone resorption.  It specifically inhibits osteoblast activity which is responsible for bone building.  It suppresses production of androgens (male hormones) in the gonads and adrogens help build bone in men.  It activates osteoclasts which causes bone to be resorbed faster than normal.  It decreases mineral absorption in the gut (and that is why a good mineral supplement is vital).  You won’t be able to absorb calcium and magnesium--both of which are needed to build bone and keep our bones strong.  It also increases kidney spilling of calcium.  So that’s another loss of calcium for us.

High Cortisol Symptoms/PTSD, Part 1

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder -- PTSD -- High Cortisol and How To Heal From It by Eileen Nauman, DHM (UK), medical astrologer

        PART 1--SYMPTOMS OF HIGH CORTISOL

    Do you have PTSD?  Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  No?  You don’t think so?  Think again.  You don't have to go to Iraq or Afghanistan to get PTSD.  You can get it in your childhood.  From a trauma of any kind.  And why should we care about high cortisol level in our  bloodstream that is caused by PTSD?  The adrenals manufacture adrenaline and cortisol.  Anyone who has gone to war (where it was a family war for eighteen years or being in the military or coming from a ghetto neighborhood, or anything you define as unsafe or threatening....) the final outcome is the SAME:  High cortisol levels.

    With this ‘haze’ of hormone that is always high and active in your bloodstream (and you won’t know it until you test for it....), it creates a nightmare existence for you.  It is an emotional haze, too.  It’s not in your head, it’s zeroed in and targets our entire emotional structure.  And unless the person is on top of this uncontrollable anxiety emotional state, they live a life in Hell.  And so do the people who are associated with this person.  Fortunately, it can be corrected and cured.  That’s the good news.  More on that in a later blog.

    Mars rules the Adrenal glands.  It is our “fight or flight” glands that sit atop our kidneys.  When we feel threatened and unsafe,  our cortisol is the first thing to shoot into our blood stream.  Then, if we feel violence is going to happen to us, here comes the adrenaline.  When the threat or sense of unsafeness is no longer there, the adrenals stop putting these hormones out into our bloodstream  and your sense of safety returns to normal.  You now feel safe and unthreatened.  You are at peace. The anxiety is gone.

    That works for some of the population.  But there are many of us “out there” where this does not occur.  And before I go into all the reasons why this is so, I feel it’s more important to share the symptoms of high cortisol levels that does not recede and turn off after an incident/trauma that we experience.

                    WHAT IS CORTISOL?

    Cortisol is a hormone that is supposed to help us meet the daily stress in our lives.  It converts protein into energy.  It releases glycogen (sugar) and counteracts inflammation. For a short time,  Cortisol is our stress protector.  BUT, if the cortisol does not subside and return to normal levels within us, then it throws us into a nightmare world where we may feel like there is this angry, anxious, threatened and feeling unsafe stranger living within us.

    And all the while this emotional storm is going on inside us, we struggle mightily to maintain a societal face to the outside world that is acceptable.     Quite literally, we  lead two lives.  The inner life is one of always feeling threatened in large and small ways, feeling unprotected, vulnerable, unable to defend ourselves, feeling anxious, tense and always ‘on guard.’

    The outer ‘mask’ we wear is trying to react normally to people and our environment regardless of how we feel internally.  This is a terrible way to live, but it is the inner life of a person is struggling with high cortisol levels.  It’s a terrible curse that has fall  out on every level of ourselves: mentally, emotionally and physically.

                        HIGH CORTISOL STAGES

    Our first stage occurs when we feel threatened in some way (trauma, heat, cold, chemical irritation, infection, stress, violence, feeling unsafe, threatened, security (money, emotional) is not there, unprotected, ect. ) the endocrine system kicks in and cortisol is released.  Our heart beats faster, our blood pressure arises and our pupils dilate.  This is the reaction stage to  threat.

    Our second stage is Adaptation.  This is the stage were we are living beneath CHRONIC, unrelieved stress.   The stress trigger might be your job, your spouse, caregiving, or a hundred other stresses defined by you.  The worst case scenario is that you had a dysfunctional childhood where this sense of no protection, feeling vulnerable and in danger, created the continuous high cortisol levels in your bloodstream.  What happens is the adrenal glands have enlarged and released large quantities of adrenal cortical hormones, the symptoms MAY disappear and we feel okay.  We have energy, and are able to function in the presence of the stress that we’re under.  We may go years or decades in this stage.  Eventually, our chronic stress catches up with us and then we “cascade” and go into the last stage.

    The last stage is Exhaustion and this is where the ‘cascade effect’ of symptoms occur.  The body’s reserves have been under attack for years or decades.  There may be lost nutrition as a result.  Our resilience to deal with this chronic stress depletes our minerals and nutrition.  There may be physical collapse, you may suffer from an emotional breakdown, become dysfunctional and/or experience an organ or body system failure, such as a heart attack or stroke.  The emotional nightmare world that the high cortisol person is trapped within can bring them to a psychiatrist and mood altering or controlling drugs are used to ‘fix it,’ which of course all it does is suppress the real problem and fixes nothing in the long term.  This is not the answer.  The good news is that all of this can be stopped.  And we can return to being a ‘normal’ human being.

            WHAT DOES HIGH CORTISOL DO TO US?

    First of all chronic stress or one, sudden trauma, can create the high cortisol levels situation.   What is high stress for me won’t be for you, so you can’t say that “this” or “that” will trigger the cortisol.  Cortisol has a role in regulating blood sugar, energy production, inflammation, supporting the immune system and in healing.  Every human responds to stress differently.

     Let’s look at some triggers and see if you find yourself in here:  lack of sleep, a demanding boss, threat of losing your job, lost your job, relationship strains, divorce, conflicts with neighbors, death or illness in your family, being a caregiver, yo-yo dieting, having to move from your home, losing your home, foreclosure worries, child worries, child illness, fighting for a parking space, caught in slow moving traffic, unable to make an appointment on time, are but a few examples.   You should define what stresses you by writing down a list of them.

    Add to this Pandora’s box of possibilities are people who come from a dysfunctional childhood.  Women who are raped, men or women who are sexually incested as children, experiencing a violent event (being robbed, beaten, nearly dying from a violent act, going to war in a foreign country, reaction to 9/11, deep subconscious wound(s) from the past that are all unresolved wounds and it sends our cortisol into high levels and it never return to normal levels.

    Lastly, don’t forget about the stress of our environment upon all of us:  air pollution, heat/cold/noise, psychological stress (worry, fear, feeling threatened, feeling unsafe, feeling attacked, ect.), biochemical stress (nutritional deficiencies, sugar and salt consumption), all play a part in this too.

    If we experience continuous high cortisol levels, then our healing ability is halted and slowed done.  The immune system becomes suppressed.  Glycogen (sugar) stores in the liver and muscle tissue are initiated and raise the blood sugar level (hypoglycemia or diabetes).  Digestion and assimilation, then, are inhibited.  The stomach lining becomes thin and ulcerated.  Our Thymus gland and lymphatic tissue shrinks.

    With all these cascade of symptoms due to high cortisol levels in our bloodstream that do not recede and return to normal, let’s look at the symptoms that it causes.  Do you find yourself among these symptoms?  If you do, in another blog I’ll tell you how to prove it by specific lab testing and then how to fix it to bring your cortisol levels down to normal function.

                   SYMPTOMS OF HIGH CORTISOL

ABDOMEN:   people with high cortisol have weight gain and it bulges in the abdominal area.  The abdominal fat is thickest and hardest to get rid of (nearly impossible) when you diet.   This is the “apple” type of body.  The fat goes first to the abdomen and is the last to be dieted off (if ever).

ADDICTIONS:  Drugs (over-the-counter), recreational drugs, alcohol--anything to escape the  monster inside yourself that keeps you anxious and edgy/tense.  Drugs helps to nullify this sense of being threatened, anxious, unsafe or unprotected.  Drugs dull these feelings but then you’re caught in a wheel of addiction.

ALLERGIES TO CERTAIN FOODS:  food intolerance's (allergies to certain food groups, such as wheat, et.) chronic gastrointestinal symptoms and other difficulties (for example, diarrhea after eating wheat products, ice cream, ect.).

ANXIETY:  all the time.  If you are from a dysfunctional home, you may have grown up with this emotional feeling and think this  anxiousness is normal.  It’s not. But you won’t know that until after you are diagnosed and on a regime to lower your cortisol level.  Anxiety make people jumpy, nervous, it produces feelings of tension that never goes away.  Tension can be  felt in the neck, shoulders or anywhere else in our body where we ‘store it.’  Unable to relax, to feel calm, at peace and a deep sense of quiet inside ourselves.  There is this sense of being ‘on edge’ is always in the background ‘noise’ of our lives.  It never goes away.

BONE LOSS : If your adrenals are compromised, they make insufficient DHEA.  This contributes to bone loss, shrinking of spinal column and loss of height.

BOWELS:  constipation or diarrhea is a constant; especially under stress people either have a day of going to bathroom 5-10 times a day or they constipate for 2-3 days after the stress.  Bowel movements only return to normal (3 BM’s a day), after stress is relieved from the person.  If not, then they cascade into other diagnoses, such as irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, divertisculosis or Crohn’s Disease.

CRITICAL:  of yourself, blaming yourself for not doing the right thing all the time, critical of self for making mistakes, putting yourself down, never feeling good about yourself, feeling ashamed or not “good enough.”  Low self-esteem.  This little voice was started in early childhood when your parent(s) told you that you were not good enough, did not measure up or in some way, disappointed them. Bad on them.

DEPRESSION:  comes and goes or is there all the time.  When under stress, the depression will occur.  When the stress is lightened or removed, the depression will lift somewhat or go away completely; depending upon the person and circumstance.

DIGESTION:  impaired.  Gut can’t absorb nutrition and we become nutritionally deficient in minerals and some vitamins.  “Leaky gut” syndrome.  Can be diagnosed as acute gastritis, heartburn, ulcers, ect. If you eat certain food groups (see Allergies, Food) there can be digestive upset, uneasiness or even nausea and in worst case scenario, vomiting.  Get tested for food allergies.  And, if having heartburn or ulcers, think about Biotics Research “Hydro-Zyme” with each meal.

DREAMING: You no longer dream.  Or if you dream, you don’t remember them.  Or, you dreamed at one time but don’t know.  Often, we are cut off from our dream world, which is tragic.  We lose this connection.  High cortisol levels at night prevent our dreaming.   Or if you dream, they are always dreams that contain anxiety, violence, a sense of vulnerability and being unable to protect yourself adequately.

ENERGY LAG:   About 2 pm to 4 pm every day.  Those who have this may use caffeine drinks (coffee, tea, soda) as a “pick-me-up”--all red flags.

EXTREME EXERCISING:  In order to take the ‘edge’ we feel inwardly in the form of restlessness or anxiety, we turn to exercise as a way to ‘tame’ these feelings.  We do it as an unconscious attempt to lower our anxiety (cortisol) levels.  Anyone who must do five miles a day, or must jog “or else,” falls into this category.  Exercise actually takes off the “edge” that we constantly feel when cortisol remains high.  And we feel if we don’t exercise, something awful will happen to us.  There’s an obsessive “drive” to exercise.  Unconsciously, we’re lowering our cortisol levels for those few hours a day...to give ourselves internal and emotional relief from it.

FATIGUE:  always feeling tired.  Even if you got twelve hours of sleep, you still wake up feeling tired.  You will “hit the wall” between  2 pm to 4 pm daily.

HEALING : slowed down and slow regeneration or slow recuperation.  If your cold or flu lasts longer and your recuperation time is abnormally slow, you are affected.
HYPERINSULISM:  Plainly put, your insulin levels are too high.  Chronic stress/high cortisol antagonizes insulin and will cause functional insulin resistance.  And, the moment you eat a carbohydrate (pasta, bread, ect.) this causes hyperinsulism response.  This is chronic insulin resistance and will lead, eventually, to pancreatic exhaustion.  Further, the body makes FAT CELLS instantly out of ANY carbohydrate being consumed.  You get FAT and the carbohydrate, which is really to be broken down and used for sugar and energy for the body, does not occur.  All you get is fat cells and weight gain.

HYPOGLYCEMIA:  Low blood sugar.  You can experience it either during the night hours or during the day time.  Try Biotics Research “Bio-Glycozyme Forte” with each meal.

IMMUNE SYSTEM:  compromised a little or a lot.  This can mean you catch a lot of colds or flu.  Or, you don’t recover quickly from them...it takes weeks instead of days to rebound.  It can mean arthritis, too.  Or any other immune-compromising acute or chronic disease falls into this category as well.

IRRITABILITY:  over things you shouldn’t get irate about in the first place -- but you do.  Irritability is always in the background with anxiety with high cortisol.  You ‘trigger’ too fast with anger, rage or irritability to the situation.  Your anger emotion clouds your judgment and mental ability to look beyond the moment.  You find yourself wrestling with anger and irritability all the time.  And when you fall victim to it, you will see it’s almost always the inappropriate emotion to have.

JOINTS:  aching.  As the cortisol cascade continues, our joints will take a hammering.  Arthritis is usually the cascade outcome.

MENTAL:  forgetful, and you may think you have Alzheimer’s, but you don’t.  This gets worse with age.  Other mental “voices” inside your head is the CRITIC.

METABOLISM:  The adrenals and thyroid are directly affected.  Only salvia testing and blood testing will confirm they are in a cascade due to high cortisol levels.  Adrenals may be in one of the seven levels of exhaustion .  The thyroid usually goes “hypo” and is slower than normal.  This gives you an array of hypothryoid symptoms. The real culprit, however, is high cortisol.  Get that fixed and your thyroid should usually return to normal function by itself.

MUSCLES:  they will be destroyed over time.  Loss of muscle mass.  If you’re exercising, lifting weights and muscle mass is hard to create OR if you don’t exercise for 2-3 days, it is lost, then you have high cortisol levels.

NEGATIVE OUTLOOK ON LIFE:  No matter what happens to you, even good things, you always fear something bad will happen next.  You cannot take joy in your triumphs.   You can’t absorb the confidence that comes with these triumphs.  This leaves you with low self esteem.   You are always looking for something bad to occur.  There is little joy or happiness in your life.  You see it as one slogging day after another.  The only emotions you really feel are fear, anger and threat.  You can’t feel joy or happiness or any of the other positive emotions others do.  “The sky is falling,” was invented by a high cortisol level person.  Depression.  Hopelessness.  Gray.  Darkness.  Loss of trust in people as well as yourself.  Also, you tend to extrapolate what will happen in any event, with any person, place or thing.  And you always will see the many possibilities and yet, at the same time, trying to protect yourself from the ‘worst case scenario’ that you believe will happen.

NEGATIVE VOICE:   this emotional sense of failure is always with you.  It tells you that you’re worthless, you should be ashamed of yourself, that you’re no good, that you’ll amount to nothing is always there whispering 24/7 in your ear.  I call this the  INNER CRITIC.  This is associated with low self esteem.

NOISE:  Can’t tolerate loud noises of any kind.  This sets the person into irritability or anger.  Sometimes, uncontrolled rage at the worst and irritability at the best.

ODORS:  As an example, perfume will send you into orbit.  You can’t stand strong smells of any kind and will avoid a perfume counter at all cost.  Many can’t go into a hospital because of the sanitizing odors.  Or at the as pump, the gas smell creates a terrific headache within minutes of inhaling the odor.  Headaches are a common response to any odor that emotionally upsets you.  Every day household supplies also create the same response.  Migraines.

SELF-EDITING:  Because you feel threatened, unsafe and potentially in danger at every turn, this is how you feel inside due to high level of cortisol in your bloodstream 24/7.  Those who are conscious and doing inner work on themselves, they realize their inner self isn’t appropriate to live in Society,  wear a  ‘mask’ of a different personality in order to protect others from how they REALLY feel inside.  This self-editing is a constant 24/7.  Your first emotional response is to want to knee jerk and become irritable, scream and get angry, but you know that’s not the right response, so you self-edit yourself.   WIth the mask in place, you speak calmly and work through the haze of your powerful emotions that want to do the opposite and act in a way that is societally acceptable.  This is a tremendous struggle.  It takes energy, time and some days you will feel like Don Quixote tilting at windmills.  There is a tiredness (emotional) that can set in because of the energy expenditure you must keep in place.

For people who are not conscious of the inner/outer personality due to high cortisol levels, they will ACT OUT how they feel inside in the OUTSIDE world, and it is completely inappropriate in every way, but they can’t help themselves at this stage.   These people are the rage-o-holics, the ‘going postal’ types, the road-ragers, the ones who kill people or attack them verbally or physically.  They are the addicts with a drug problem.   They are the abusers on every level: mental, emotional and physical.

SEX DRIVE:  decreased to nonexistent.

WEIGHT GAIN:  Always.  Hard to lose it.  Craving for comfort foods.  Craving for sugar and salt.  And, you gain weight even as you diet!  It’s nearly impossible to lose your weight no matter how much exercise and diet you throw into the mix.  Unless you go on a severe 600 calorie a day diet (women), you can lose the weight but as soon as you try to eat more than that, the weight comes right back on.  No matter the diet, you cannot ever lose weight and keep it off.  Obesity is the result unless you have the iron fist strength to maintain a 600 to 900 calorie a day diet for the rest of your life.  It’s a miserable way to live.  Pasta and bread products are your biggest weight gain choices.  Usually an allergy to wheat is present. See:  Hyperinsulism.  Allergies, Food.

RELATED DIAGNOSIS: If you have Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Arthritis, Premature Menopause, these can all be tied into high cortisol levels and/or adrenal exhaustion.

H1N1/Mexican Swine Flu: Lab created? Released on us?

Was the Mexican Swine Flu created in a laboratory?

Was it released upon the world with intent?

Read on......

This is an update on the Mexican Swine Flu, H1N1.  Promed, out of Harvard University, is a disease watching list.  In it, they have put an article by Adrian Gibs, a virologist, who said n May 2009 that the swine flu MAY HAVE escaped from a laboratory.  His findings were published in the www.bloomberg.com.  Below is the info from ProMed:

Adrian Gibbs, the virologist who said in May [2009] that swine flu may have escaped from a laboratory, published his findings today [24 Nov 2009], renewing discussion about the origins of the pandemic virus. The new pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus, which was discovered in Mexico and the U.S. in April [2009], may be the product of 3 strains from 3 continents that swapped genes in a lab or a vaccine-manufacturing plant, Gibbs, and fellow Australian scientists wrote in Virology Journal [see comment below]. The authors analyzed the genetic makeup of the virus and found its origin could be more simply explained by human involvement than a coincidence of nature. Their study, published in a free, online journal reviewed by other scientists, follows debate among researchers 6 months ago, when Gibbs asked the World Health Organization to consider the hypothesis. After reviewing Gibbs' initial 3-page paper, WHO and other organizations concluded the pandemic strain was a naturally occurring virus and not laboratory-derived.

"It is important that the source of the new virus be found if we wish to avoid future pandemics rather than just trying to minimize the consequences after they have emerged," Gibbs and colleagues John Armstrong and Jean Downie said in today's 8-page study.
Gibbs and Armstrong are on the emeritus faculty at the Australian National University in Canberra and Downie is affiliated with the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Laboratory Services at Sydney's Westmead Hospital. While the exact source of the new H1N1 strain is a mystery, their research has "raised many new questions," they said. The authors compared the genetic blueprints of flu strains stored in the free database GenBank and found the pandemic virus's nearest ancestors circulate in pigs. While migratory birds may have acted as conduit for their convergence, human involvement in bringing them together is "by far the simplest explanation," Gibbs said in a telephone interview today [24 Nov 2009].

Gibbs wrote or coauthored more than 250 scientific publications on viruses, mostly pertaining to the plant world, during his 39-year career at the Australian National University, according to biographical information on the university's Web site. "Knowing Adrian Gibbs, he will have thought through it pretty logically and come to that conclusion," Lance Jennings, a clinical virologist with Canterbury Health Laboratories in Christchurch, New Zealand, said in a telephone interview. "It's up to someone else to try and prove it or disprove it."

[The publication referred to above is entitled: "From where did the 2009 'swine-origin' influenza A virus (H1N1) emerge?" By Adrian J. Gibbs(1), John S. Armstrong(1) and Jean C. Downie(2), at (1) Australian National University Emeritus Faculty, ACT, 0200, Australia, and (2) CIDMLS, ICPMR, Westmead Hospital, NSW, 2145, Australia.
The Abstract reads: "The swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus that appeared in 2009 and was 1st found in human beings in Mexico, is a reassortant with at least 3 parents. 6 of the genes are closest in sequence to those of H1N2 'triple-reassortant' influenza viruses isolated from pigs in North America around 1999-2000. Its other 2 genes are from different Eurasian 'avian-like' viruses of pigs; the NA gene is closest to H1N1 viruses isolated in Europe in 1991-1993, and the MP gene is closest to H3N2 viruses isolated in Asia in 1999-2000. The sequences of these genes do not directly reveal the immediate source of the virus as the closest were from isolates collected more than a decade before the human pandemic started.

The 3 parents of the virus may have been assembled in one place by natural means, such as by migrating birds, however the consistent link with pig viruses suggests that human activity was involved. We discuss a published suggestion that unsampled pig herds, the intercontinental live pig trade, together with porous quarantine barriers, generated the reassortant. We contrast that suggestion with the possibility that laboratory errors involving the sharing of virus isolates and cultured cells, or perhaps vaccine production, may have been involved. Gene sequences from isolates that bridge the time and phylogenetic gap between the new virus and its parents will distinguish between these possibilities, and we suggest where they should be sought. It is important that the source of the new virus be found if we wish to avoid future pandemics rather than just trying to minimize the consequences after they have emerged. Influenza virus is a very significant zoonotic pathogen. Public confidence in influenza research, and the agribusinesses that are based on influenza's many hosts, has been eroded by several recent events involving the virus. Measures that might restore confidence include establishing a unified international administrative framework coordinating surveillance, research and commercial work with this virus, and maintaining a registry of all influenza isolates."

On the basis of a wide ranging analysis of the available genome sequence data, the authors conclude the following. Influenza virus is a very significant zoonotic pathogen. Public confidence in influenza research, and the agribusinesses that are based on influenza's many hosts, has been eroded by several recent events. Measures that might restore confidence include establishing both a unified international administrative framework coordinating all surveillance, research and commercial work with this virus, and also a detailed registry of all influenza isolates held for research and vaccine production. The phylogenetic information presently available does not identify the source of S-OIV [the nomenclature in the paper, ProMED uses pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus or H1N1pdm], however it provides some clues, which can be translated into hypotheses of where and how it might have originated. Two contrasting possibilities have been described and discussed in this commentary, but more data are needed to distinguish between them. It would be especially valuable to have gene sequences of isolates filling the time and phylogenetic gap between those of H1N1pdm and those closest to it. We believe that these important sequences are most likely to be found in isolates from as-yet-unsampled pig populations or as-yet-unsampled laboratories, especially those holding isolates of all 3 clusters of viruses closest to those of H1N1pdm, and involved in vaccine research and production. Quarantine and trade records of live pigs entering North America could probably focus the search for the unsampled pig population. It is likely that further information about H1N1pdm's immediate ancestry will be obtained when the unusual features of its PB1-F2 gene are understood.

In the end, thus, the authors come to no firm conclusions, and perhaps the most interesting part of their analysis is that which relates to the "laboratory error theory". They claim that there are clear historical precedents for most of the events described in the above scenarios. Viruses do 'escape' from laboratories, even high security facilities. The H1N1 influenza lineage that circulated in the human population for 4 decades after the 1918 Spanish influenza epidemic, disappeared during the 1957 Asian influenza pandemic, was absent for 2 decades, but then reappeared in 1977. Gene sequences of the 1977 isolate and others collected in the 1950s were almost identical, indicating that the virus had not replicated and evolved in the interim, and had probably been held in a laboratory freezer between 1950 and 1977 and 'escaped' during passaging.

The suggestion that persistently infected cells might be involved is also not outlandish; influenza virus can persistently and latently infect MDCK cells, and viruses do travel between laboratories in cells. Multivalent 'killed' vaccines are widely used to control swine influenzas, particularly in North American piggeries; indeed, one of the viruses identified by us and others as closest to H1N1pdm, A/swine/Indiana/P12439/2000 (H1N2), seems to be the "2000 Indiana strain" used in commercial vaccines in North America. We also note that isolates selected from the 3 clusters of viruses we find to be closest to H1N1pdm would probably make a useful trivalent vaccine for international use as they would provide a mixture of haemagglutinins of the swine H3, H1 'classical swine' and H1 'Eurasian avian-like' lineages.

The patchy occurrence of H1N1pdm infections in piggeries over the past 6 months is interesting and may be significant. Pigs have been shown to be fully susceptible to H1N1pdm. They shed the virus and readily transmit it between themselves, but whereas H1N1pdm has been reported in humans worldwide, it has not yet been reported from a pig farm in the USA (October 2009). By contrast, it has been found in 2 piggeries each in Australia, Canada and Ireland, and one each in Argentina, Indonesia and Japan. In the outbreaks in Argentina, Australia and Canada, the apparent immunity to H1N1pdm of pigs in the USA and Mexico, but not elsewhere, may indicate that the swine influenza vaccines currently used in the USA and Mexico contain an immunogen that either protects against H1N1pdm infection or mitigates its symptoms.

Circumstantial evidence must always be treated with caution. One major uncertainty in trying to determine the origin of H1N1pdm is that one cannot predict which characters of the parental viruses have remained or changed during the reassortment process that produced H1N1pdm. If, for example, the significant infectiousness of H1N1pdm is an 'emergent' property of H1N1pdm, and not shown by its parents, then one could conclude that the final reassortment probably occurred at about the time it emerged in early 2009. However, it is not yet known whether H1N1pdm's infectiousness is novel; the reassortment may have occurred a decade ago, and a recent mutation may have enhanced its infectiousness. Another widely reported feature of H1N1pdm is that it replicates poorly in embryonated eggs, but again this may be merely a specific feature of H1N1pdm and not its immediate parents. Similarly, the fact that the evolutionary rate of all of the genes of H1N1pdm seem to be 'normal' during their unsampled pre-emergent period does not prove that the virus or its parents have been maintained in "unsampled" pig herds and precluded the possibility of human involvement, as viruses grown for vaccines evolve, and indeed might be expected to show an increased evolutionary rate, while adapting to eggs, a new host, although such an increase may have been offset by the practice of storing 'seed stocks' for use in several 'production cycles' in vaccine production, so that the evolutionary age of a vaccine virus may be less than its sidereal age, and the average could then appear to be 'normal'.

Finally, there is the report that the 1st human H1N1pdm infections were in Perote, a small Mexican town with a very large number of large piggeries, although it was also reported that none of the pigs showed signs of influenza. Among the earliest cases were some in Oaxaca, 290 km to the south [34]. Perote is an unlikely place for an infected migratory pig to arrive from an intercontinental trip, as the town is in a remote high valley surrounded by mountains, 200 km to the east of Mexico City, where there is the nearest major airport, and 130 km from the nearest port at Vera Cruz. The 4-month difference between 'The Most Recent Common Ancestor' date for H1N1pdm estimated from its phylogeny, and its earliest detection in the human population, makes it more difficult to make specific conclusions about its provenance.

What can astrology tell us?  When ever there is an “oops” factor involved, we’re looking at Neptune and Uranus.  The “oops” can be accident or it can be done intentionally.   Either way, these two planets are involved. And if you want to get into lethality consciousness on the part of the person who deliberately did the release of this virus, Pluto will be involved, also.   The “sneaky” Uranian planet is Admetos--something that is hidden from view but can b toxic to us.

ASPECTS AND ANALYSIS

We have another “oops” pandemic flu chart to look at.  In 1977 the was the Russian Flu.   There’s an interesting theory about this particular flu virus. There is suggestions that this was not an natural outbreak; rather it was an escape of a laboratory strain!! There was no high mortality from this flu.

1977 Russian Flu natal chart:
1977 Russia Flu natal chart.jpg

Here we have Admetos, Mercury and Chiron conjunct in early Taurus.  Admetos shows what is ‘hidden’ from public view.  I would say based upon this that the virus was traveling (Mercury) and then was either released by accident or on purpose because Chiron was conjunct Admetos.  This is an ‘oops’ signature for release of a virus--rather intentional or not.  Admetos was also opposite Uranus, so the possibility of an accidental spill is very possible.  If we want to add a malevolent aspect to this, Mars was opposite Pluto.  And Pluto is lethal intent.

Mexican Flu Virus natal chart:

mexico city flu epidemic astro chart small.jpg

This is the first cluster cases of the Mexican Swine Flu epidemic reported from Mexico City, Mexico.

Looking for the “oops factor,”  Mars was with orb and approaching Uranus in a conjunction.  Further, Chiron and Neptune were conjuct, with Jupiter approaching and with in orb.  Venus is squaring Pluto and this could mean the heart of the person who released this virus really didn’t like humanity a whole lot.  There was intent to harm  (Pluto) life (Venus).  We have three out of the four players active at the time of the Mexican Swine flu release.   And, as in the last release in 1977, Chiron is a key player in both.

Is it possible that the H1N1 was a lab manufactured concoction of flu viruses?  Absolutely.

Is it possible that it was deliberately released?  Yes

We are looking, then, at a possible terrorist act by a nation who did this with the intent of killing off a lot of people in one fell swoop.

No one likes to think in these terms, but this isn’t the first “oops” release of a virus from a lab.  And ProMed’s support of this hypothesis makes it pretty damming that it COULD have happened.

From my analysis of the Mexican Swine Flu chart, that was posted June of 2009, I said:

Admetos 24 Taurus sextile Vulcanus 24 Cancer -- The virus is incubating, (Admetos) changing and mutating with even more intensity than usual.  There are hidden aspects to the epidemic that no one is yet aware of.  Admetos means pneumonia for the flu victims.  And now, the pneumonia is going to be even swifter in killing them--48 hours or less.  And this is because Vulcanus, the ‘adverbial function’ is presenting this aspect.  It makes Admetos even more powerful than before.

COMMENT:  With Admetos in the ‘mix’ to show terrorism, sneaky intent to unveil something that has been hidden to do damage to others, this is the aspect that is the clincher for me.  I do believe that (a) the virus was created in a lab and (b) it was deliberately released with intent.

H1N1 FLU VIRUS MUTATES--WHAT TO DO

Medical Astrology:  UPDATE ON THE Mexican Swine Flu, H1N1, mutates November 20, 2009

by Eileen Nauman, DHM, medical astrologer

On July 13, 2009, in my 20 part blog at     http://talesfromechocanyon.blogspot.com/, I wrote the following:

“PART 20 -- FORECAST FOR THE MEXICAN  SWINE FLU WINTER 2009 and SPRING 2010

    The underpinning for the Mexican Swine Flu to take off in the November 2009 time frame is due to Saturn square Pluto.  And again, we see the 0 (zero) degree being important here.  The zero degree means ‘new’ or ‘seed’ from a symbolic standpoint.  It could be at this time the virus mutates--that would signal something ‘new’ insofar as the pandemic is concerned.”

                                  IT HAS HAPPENED.....

                            UPDATE, NOVEMBER 21, 2009

    On November 9th, there were reports of violent H1N1 flu was creating catastrophic deaths in the Ukrain. My friend and homeopathic colleague in Germany, Gaby Rottler, has been closely watching this virus.  She has an up-to-date website at: http://www.curantur.de/H5N1___H1N1/h5n1___h1n1.html

    She notes on her website the following information:

The reports from Ukraine are cause for concern.

http://www.moz.gov.ua/ua/main/press/?docID=14028

(Google translation)
90 fatalities:
52 people aged 19 to 40 years,
26 people age of 41-55 years
other cases have been reported in the elderly and children.

The symptoms are observed at different stages of disease:

    * a fever with a temperature over 38 C
    * cough
    * respiratory disorders
    * phlegm or dry unproductive cough with blotches of blood
    * All the patients come to hospital on average by 3-7 days of onset, were in serious condition
    * Period of time from onset to death averaged from 4 to 7 days
    * signs of respiratory insufficiency of various degrees, which quickly rose and manifested accelerated respiration rate, shortness of breath and effectiveness of independent breathing
    * X-ray studies were performed on 1-2 day hospitalization
    * in most patients double-sided  lower lung lesions, followed by a trend towards total destruction.

My comment: the hemorrhagic pneumonia described, the coughing up of blood clearly resembles the 1918 Spanish flu. Homeopaths should be well aware of the hemorrhagic flu remedies.

    Then, on November 10th, Gaby wrote:  “I think it may be time for a ***CAVE***:

There may be a high probability that Aspirin is contraindicated during all stages of the disease - at least history has shown this during the Spanish flu:

J. Winston quotes from an article entitled "Homeopathy In Influenza - A Chorus Of Fifty In Harmony" by W. A. Dewey, MD:

      "There is one drug which directly or indirectly was the cause of the loss of more lives than was influenza itself. You all know that drug. It claims to be salicylic acid. Aspirin's history has been printed. Today you don't know what the sedative action of salicylic acid is. It did harm in two ways. Its indirect action came through the fact that aspirin was taken until prostration resulted and the patient developed pneumonia. -Frank L. Newton, MD, Somerville, Massachusetts

      Aspirin and the other coal tar products are condemned as causing great numbers of unnecessary deaths. The omnipresent aspirin is the most pernicious drug of all. It beguiles by its quick action of relief of pain, a relief which is but meretricious. In several cases aspirin weakened the heart, depressed the vital forces, increased the mortality in mild cases and made convalescence slower. In all cases it masks the symptoms and renders immeasurably more difficult the selection of the curative remedy. Apparently aspirin bears no curative relation to any disease and it ought to be prohibited. -Guy Beckly Stearns, MD, New York"

And from a WHO paper from May 21, 2009:
http://www.who.int/child_adolescent_health/news/archive/2009/09_05_21/en/index.html

      Salicylates (such as aspirin and aspirin-containing products) should not be used in children and adolescents (aged <18 years) because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome;

Reye’s syndrome with severe damage of the liver had been observed by Mexican doctors.

Regarding the hemorrhagic pneumonia e.g. in Ukraine, knowing about the blood-thinning properties of Aspirin, I would definitely avoid using Aspirin even in the very beginning of the disease, regardless of age.”

    In Norway this week (November 15 on the New Moon at 24 Scorpio) it was announced that the H1N1 virus had mutated in two individuals.      http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34065140/ns/health-cold_and_flu/ details this information.

    In it, on November 21, 2009, she says, “Where there is the mutation D225G in the RBD (receptor binding domain), we have a different tropism, i.e. the virus has a deeper affinity to lung tissue. In this case, pneumonia and severe developments (including cytokine storms) with fatal outcome  may be seen more frequent. Apart from that, diagnosis done  with swabs from nose or throat may be false negative - as the location of this strand is located in the lower respiratory tract, i.e. lungs.

An additional article from NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/21/health/21flu.html?_r=1”

        POSSIBLE HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

    I know many will be asking about homeopathic remedies to combat this new mutated form of H1N1.  Let’s take a page out of the past.  In Gaby’s website on April 24, 2009, homeopathic remedies were being used in Mexico.  The symptoms were:

Sudden fever, higher than 39°
cough
violent head ache
muscle pains, joint aches
irritation of eyes
nasal discharge

Important: most cases are healthy young adults
This really bears resemblance to the H1N1 Pandemic, the Spanish Flu in the early 20th century.

Homeopathic Remedies to be considered:
Eupatorium perfoliatum
Gelsemium
Bryonia
Tuberculinum
Euphorbium
Ferrum phosphoricum
Camphora

and 2 snake remedies

Elaps corallinus
Crotalus horridus

And this new mutated version is going for the lungs, then the two snake remedies may become vital to combating it.  Also note, that Gelsemium seems to be one of the top remedies but this is based upon the old virus and not the new one.  It is still a remedy I would keep on hand.  During the Spanish Flu, Gelsemium was one of the front line remedies that saved people from dying.

    In Argentina, on July 28, 2009, a male 29 years old had the following symptoms:
Summarizing:

    * very high fever
    * the most violent headache
    * as if the head would split into ten thousand pieces
    * whole body is painful
    * muscle pain
    * vomiting
    * dry cough

The vomiting is important - this symptom has also been described by Mexican homeopaths who were treating the flu.

    FLU IS WANING IN THE USA NOVEMBER 20, 2009

    So, what is happening?  right now, the American College Health Association has said new cases of flu have dropped, the week ending November 13, 2009.  Friday, November 20, 2009, Quest Diagnostics, the USA’s, largest laboratory said it’s tests of 142,000 suspected flu specimens since May, said the virus peaked in October, 2009.  So, we are on a downhill slide with the virus.  But then, it moved EAST (as all virus’s do) and it then mutated in possibly the Ukraine where it showed powerful new symptoms and death.  Then, it moved to Norway where they have shown the mutation did occur.

    Dr. Lone Simonsen, an epidemiologist at George Washington University, noted that the 1918 and 1957 flu virus had a mild summer wave followed by two other waves, on in the Fall (November, 2009) and the  one in Midwinter (Feb/March, 2010).  Simonsen also said that she felt that a “third wave would begin in December 2009 or January, 2010 in the the South (hemisphere) AGAIN.

As I predicted, the mutation HAS occurred right on time with the Saturn square Pluto.  This mutation is known as the D222G, a receptor binding domain that allows the virus to grow deeper in the lung.  D222G find with lung lining whereas the original H1N1 bound with cell lining in the nose and throat of flu victims.  The fact that its in the lungs isn’t a good sign.  Pneumonia could come within 48 hours of getting this mutated virus, I believe (although that has to be proven out yet).

    And I believe the ‘third wave’ (possibly ANOTHER mutation will occur at this time) will be March/April 2010.  Please read from my forecast which is below.

    Tamiflu, the touted defender, is not working as well, either.  There is definite Tamiflu resistance.  Duke University Medical Center found four cases among its patients in six weeks.  Worse, in a Welsh hospital, authorities reported five in that hospital.

     This now makes this virus a whole ‘new’ form and format.  This is the beginning of the “second wave,” that will now circle the world (again).  The symptoms will no longer be exactly like the original Swine Flu.  As in so many other cases of pandemics that have been recorded and observed by the medical and health people since the late 1800’s, the virus is behaving as others have already.

    First, the virus mutates.  New symptoms, in this case, the lungs/pneumonia are now targeted.   If you will go back over the parts of m blog that begin on 6.22.2009, and read each one, I show, epidemic by epidemic, what has happened in the past.  Even if you don’t know astrology, you can follow along.  Probably the most important one is my July 13, 2009 where I gave my medical astrology forecast for this pandemic.

    The “second wave” has, at times, been benign and then the “third wave,” (usually occurs in the second year that the virus spans the globe) is the killer who takes out a lot of people.  But, sometimes, it is the “second wave” (which generally occurs about nine months into the first spanning of the globe--and this one has done it right on time) is the killer.  I believe the 2nd and 3rd waves will BOTH be more lethal than the original wave of this flu based upon the astrological aspects.

    In the Spanish Flu of 1918, the lungs were targeted and bleeding from the mouth, nose and ears occurred.  And people’s lungs were the target of that virus.  Now, unfortunately, it appears that the mutation is targeting the lungs as well.

    I would like to include my July 13, 2009 forecast blog on the flu so you can track it and know what is going on now and in the future:

 “And so,  in the closing days of October, Saturn goes into 0 Libra while Pluto is at 1 Capricorn.  Both are primary epidemic indicators.  And now, they are both in cardinal signs, which promises assertiveness and more activity of the virus.  It helps punch up the virus in November, when it really takes off in the Northern hemisphere.

Saturn gives the virus ‘legs’ to continue in the Fall even during the holding pattern of Jupiter retrograde through the summer and into the early Fall.  Saturn has played a quiet but powerful part along with Vulcanus (also another type of endurance) so that the virus can remain stable and circulating in both hemispheres. And this is what makes this virus different.  It has had the ability to infect in warm/humid areas as well as colder climes.  Other reported pandemics did not have this feature to the degree that the Mexican Swine Flu has.  This particular aspect is most powerful in October and November of 2009, right when the other planets and aspects are pushing the virus out there into our world and particularly in the northern hemisphere.

 What is worrisome is that Pluto, the planet of genetic mutation is square Saturn.  While this means that Saturn is ‘holding’ the mutation possibility to a minimum there are other planetary players that are out there supporting the exact opposite.  Whether the virus mutates or not is not known.  However, this ‘staying power’ of Saturn along with Pluto is what gives this virus its power to remain alive and active in our world and blow it into a raging pandemic beginning in November 2009.

 The virus will be at its optimum in January, February, March and April 2010 with little let up.  In February 15, 2010, Chiron and Neptune are exactly conjunct and this is when the worst of the epidemic is going to be felt.  (NOTE: this is the “second wave,” the one with the mutation found in Norway targeting our lungs).

 Jupiter is now in the sign of Pisces and while no longer conjunct its epidemic partners of Chiron and Neptune, being in this sign would normally mean protection.  Pisces rules the lymph gland system--our main defense against attacks by bacteria and viruses.  Normally, Jupiter here would be a good thing, but unfortunately, stressful Uranus is in this sign as well at 24 Pisces.  This means stresses of all kinds (life, for example) is putting more pressure than normal on everyone’s immune systems.  Too much stress lowers the immune system’s ability to fight off invasion by a bacteria or virus.  Having Jupiter there is still better than nothing, but Uranus really takes away from this protection that Pisces could have had during this pandemic.

 In March, Neptune is at 27 Aquarius and Chiron at 28 Aquarius.  Jupiter continues to be in Pisces and so does Uranus.   On March 11, 2010, Mars goes direct at 0 Leo.  This is when we’ll see the virus kick in and get more aggressive than we’ve seen when Mars was retrograde. (NOTE: I believe the “third wave” will occur at this time).

 April is going to be another kind of grueling trial.  Chiron is at 29 Aquarius for the entire month.  The 29th degree is a high emotional drama time.  The 29th degree is about ‘clean up’ of anything in our life that hasn’t been taken care of -- it will be taken care of now.  Those who tend to suppress their emotions will find themselves under what I term a ‘discharge’ period.  From a medical astrology perspective this means that if you don’t release the backlog of built up emotional issues, then acute or chronic ailments come to land on your doorstep.  In doing that, it does effectively discharge the captured energy so you can get on with your life.

   There could be a lot of deaths in April because of this 29th degree phenomena.  The old adage, “Better OUT than IN,” should be our battle cry.  If one is discharging, then one is not going to get sick.  Until Chiron moves into 0 Pisces on May 1, 2010, will we see this epidemic ebb at this time.  The virus will go underground in this month.  And like other epidemic virus, there’s no guarantee it’s going to stay there.  There are usually three ‘waves’ to an epidemic.  The second wave kicks in the Fall of 2009 and lasts through May 2010.   Will the virus go underground and stay there?  Or come up for a third time?  Right now, it looks like the virus will incubate once more. Summer of 2010, however, has other storm clouds on the horizon that are going to catch our attention. “

            WHAT CAN BE DONE?

    I’ve written a book on homeopathy and epidemics.  I hope you have a copy of it.  Homeopathy for Epidemics was written several years ago because I saw this pandemic coming.  You can buy it at:     https://gator147.hostgator.com/~eileen/store/mgstore_books.html. and if you don’t have the money, save it for my homeopathic kit that has all the potential remedies that may be needed for MOST epidemics.  It is called

The NAUMAN ADVANCED Homeopathic First Aid Kit (Help and Homeopathy) 50 Remedies     $119.95.  This can be ordered at: http://www.dataroad.net/cgi-bin/start/hahnemannlabs.com/home_first_aid_kits.html

This advanced kit was created by me to go with my book on Epidemics and is your front line defense.  You should know something about homeopathy.  And if you don’t, you should have a homeopath who can guide and direct you on what to take for your symptoms.  There is NO SENSE in buying this kit if you don’t have some homeopathic knowledge and/or a homeopath.

        FIND A HOMEOPATH IN YOUR AREA

    This is easy to do.  Just go to www.homeopathic.org.  There is a DIRECTORY of homeopaths for the USA and Canada.  Just follow the directions to locate one nearest to where you live.  Make an appointment and see your homeopath.  They are the ones who will be able to tell you what remedy to take based upon your individualized symptoms.

    One of the best things that can be done to bump up your immune system is to take your constitutional remedy.  Only a professional homeopath can find this one, unique remedy for you which means you get an appointment to get your case taken.

    And if you don’t, you can still get to a homeopath to establish a working relationship so that if you or your family develops flu-like symptoms, you can call the homeopath to find out what ACUTE homeopathic remedy can help you get through it.

    I strongly recommend you find a homeopath NOW because when this second wave hits the USA, it will be too late.  Do it NOW.  You won’t be sorry.

    I will be issuing updates on the virus since I’m a homeopathic epidemic researcher.  I will also, whenever possible, put up information about what homeopathic remedies are fighting this mutated H1N1 virus.

    Don’t panic.  MOST middle to older aged people got the swine flu in the 1950’s once, maybe two times.  They all have antibodies and are less likely to contract the virus.  And if they do, a milder case should ensue.  All the children who have been vaccinated up to their eyeballs and their immune systems were NOT taught to grow strong on the normal childhood diseases are now the main target of this virus.  As a homeopath, the only way to protect them is to get their constitutional case taken.  They are most at risk and this is a sad situation for so many parents.  Please see a homeopath if you have children.

Sun in Pisces, Medical Astrology, Part 1

Medical Astrology:  Sun in Pisces, Part 1 by Eileen Nauman, DHM, medical astrologer

    Pisces is the SOLE of our foot and our SOUL.  How profound.  Neptune has rulership over our soul but it is Pisces who puts it all into motion.

    And you must ask yourself:  How can Pisces, which is a mutable sign, considered weak and wimpy by many, and run by watery, nebulous, foggy Neptune, end up having rulership over our FEET, of all things?  Feet are the FOUNDATION for movement of our  human body.  And in a parallel, our Soul is out spiritual foundation of ourselves (in or out of physical form).  This should give everyone pause to take a new and different look at this sign in a medical sense.  There’s more than meets the eye here and just like Neptune, Pisces’ abilities can be easily overlooked.  But isn't that just like Neptune?  What you don't see you don't realize is there?  Or that being invisible, we don't realize the impact of it on ourselves.  That's a good definition of our quiet, unobtrusive lymph gland system.

Pisces rules the ENTIRE lymph gland system; so important to our immune response.  Not enough can be said in this blog, but I'll touch on highlights.  The lymph system is so Neptunian; it "shadows" our circulatory system.  You never know its there, but in times of illness, it is your front line warrior who protects you.

    Pisces is badly misunderstood in medical astrology.  Everyone seems to know it rules the feet, but there is much, much more.  And what Pisces rules over will make or break a person’s chance at health or lack of it.  The equally important rulership is our lymph gland system.  Like the mutable sign Pisces, it is a multitasker.   The circulatory system has a heart pump to move our blood along.  Not so in the lymph system, which is just as large and spread throughout our body.  It has no heart to rely on.
This is a partial view of our lymph gland system.  The little purple dots denote some of the many lymph node stations are at.

As the entire system collects our ‘garbage’, this drains into lymph capillaries which are very, very tiny vessels.  Think of it as a sponge that gives and takes water and transports it to the blood or lymph, when needed.  The fluids are then pushed along by our breathing, gravity and our movement (as muscles contract it shoves the fluid forward).  Massage, which is excellent for this system, is another “hand’s-on” way to get the lymph and the debris it carries, to empty it into the circulatory system so it can be discharged.  That is why light exercise, yoga breathing tai chi,  and massage are excellent ways to move our lymph.
Here's a close up of a lymph node "station" where many different functions are accomplished in getting the toxins out of our body.

The lymph can suck extra fluid out of the circulatory system.  If it didn’t, we’d have ‘edema’ or swelling of the feet, ankles and legs, as an example.  Basically old dead cell debris and other toxins are carried by the system that shows the circulatory system.  Like Neptune, you don’t see it or feel it, but it’s there quietly doing it’s job.

You can see in this illustration that the lymph gland system "shadows" our circulatory system.  The Circulatory system has a heart and the lymph gland system does not.  Only gravity, muscle movement and breathing move the garbage fluids and toxins that it carries to certain points where it dumps it into the circulatory system to get rid of it.

    Lymph consists of watery (think Neptune here) fluid that is clear, and contains protein molecules, urea, glucose, salts and other debris material.   It’s responsible for accumulating extra fluid to send it back (or remove it from) the circulatory system when needed.  This process is performed in the tiny capillary beds all over the body where veins, arteries and lymph all meet to make this exchange occur.

Here is a nice illustration showing how the actual garbage and toxins that the lymph glands collect are "transferred" over to the teeny, tiny capillary system of the circulatory system.

    This drainage is a vital and important part to keep the body cleaned up. Think of the lymph system as a broom, mop, sweeper and dust rag. Anything that could hurt the body usually ends up in this shadowy drainage system.  Its job is to protect us from bacteria, virus and fungi.

    Secondly, it is a huge part of our immune system, but not all of it.  You can read about the Spleen (it’s job is to break down old red blood cells and other unknown bodies from the bloodstream in order to protect us from infection.  The Thymus and the liver  round out the bulwark of our defense system against bacteria and viruses.

    The lymph nodes are found all over the body.  Think of them as “filtering stations.”    As the fluid comes through these nodal stations, macrophages (one type of white blood cell) fights off unknown bodies such as bacteria and remove them from the bloodstream.  Then, the “clean” fluid can leave the node to return to the veins.  There, they reenter the bloodstream and the process is repeated.

    The main duct is known as the Thoracic Duct.  It starts near the lower part of our spinal column and gathers the lymph nodes from the pelvis, abdomen and chest.  This goes all the way up through our chest and empties into the blood which runs through the large vein on the left side of our neck.
Here is an illustration of the thoracic duct on both sides of the spinal column.  If you ever needed a reason to get a massage, this is WHY.  Massage moves lymph from the spinal column area and it's a good way to get rid of toxins faster, quicker and better.

    The right lymph duct gathers lymph from the right side of our neck, chest and arms.  This is then emptied into a large vein on the right side of our neck.

    The Thymus gland sits very close to the heart.  It is the largest when we are children because it is the main guardian of our struggling immune system to get on line.  It is fully functioning at birth and by the time we’re an adult, it has shrunk considerably.  It’s job is to release lymphocytes.  They are carried to the lymph nodes, spleen and other lymphatic tissue.  They form colonies and this forms the basis of the T-lymphocyte, one our main immune system defenders.

BREAST CANCER:

The lymphatic system serves as the sewage system for cellular waste in the body.    Three percent of the lymphatic fluid draining the breast is found in the lymph nodes located in the area of the breast bone in the internal mammary nodes. Ninety seven percent of the fluid is drained through the nodes located in the area of the armpit, referred to as the axilla.

If you ladies ever thought that the lymph gland system isn't important and a part of why women get breast cancer, think again.  Wear bras prohibits the toxins from filtering out of our breast region.  And the garbage sits for years and begins to rot--and then cancer begins.  Throw away your bra. Your breasts will be happy and you won't have to worry about breast cancer in my opinon.

There are three levels of lymph nodes under the arm. The first level is located from the breast to the underarm area; the second level is behind the pectoralis minor, a small muscle on the chest wall. And the third level is located higher on the chest near the collar bone.

And so where does all the toxins that the lymph glands carry and they can't escape because women wear tight bras around their torso and stop it from flowing downward and out of this area?  Why, into the fat cells!  Think of a tight band around your torso.  Gravity, muscle movement nor breathing can get the toxic stuff from the lymph out of your breast area because you have constricted to the point where it cannot flow out.  So, the garbage dump of toxins resides in your breast tissue.  Not a pretty picture, is it?

    It doesn’t matter where in the body there are lymph nodes and the lymph system, it is all under Pisces’ domain.  Lymph becomes very important to women who wear bras.   Check it out:  the modern bra was patented by a New York Socialite in 1913. However, it was men who invented these breast cancer traps a decade earlier, she just got smart and got a patent on it, was all.

    If you think I’m over stating this, I’m not. When you study the amount of lymph around and in a woman’s breast, plus the fat (which is a storage vessel), and you put something tight and restrictive around a person’s entire body, you’re going to have problems.   Have you ever noticed we didn’t have breast cancer hardly at all before 1913?  Check out the breast cancer rates now.  It blows me away.   Throw your bra away.

    Why?  Because the woman who wears a tight bra is stopping the lymph from its natural gravitational downward flow.  And as we already know, the lymph contains toxins and debris--it is our garbage dump.  It’s job is to get RID of these toxins before it kills us.  So, when the lymph can’t drain completely, guess where its stored?  Yep, in the fat cells of our breasts.  And there’s back up and refuse in the lymph nodes above and under our armpits.  All these become “breeding grounds” for disease. In this case, breast cancer.

    And if any of you doubt me on this working theory, check out this book called DRESSED TO KILL by Singer and Grismaijer, Avery Press, 1995.   This book will convince you not to wear a bra.   I threw my bra away at age 40.  I always hated bras; they’re unnatural. Allow your breasts to swing free--as they move, the lymph moves and everything works fine.  But start tying your breasts down with under-wire bras, tight, constricting bands around your torso and over time, you are asking for trouble.

Scheduling Heart Surgery

Hi Everyone
For whatever reason, and I'm not geek enuf to figure it out, I cannot answer my own blog questions posed by you. In an effort around this, I'll put your questions into blog form in hopes you will see them.   And if anyone knows WHY I can't answer my own blogs, send me an email with thanks

I received this today from my surgery blog:

Hi, this stuff are great, but I do not know how to know the correct time of a surgery yet. I will have to do a HEART surgery next year, but do not know to choose it in March or April?

And which days are better?

Can you please give me some dates around March or April that you think is suitable to have a heart surgery???

By the way my surgeon has a Pisces sun and my DOB is 28/01/81

COMMENT:
Dear Anonymous
your questions can be answered by someone who has been trained by me to figure out the best date for your surgery.  I would suggest Rosemarie Brown, Sedona, Arizona.  You can contact her and she can tell you what she needs from you in order to help you.  Just email her at:  starrose@sedona.net

I hope you find this of help.

Sun in Aquarius, Medical Astrology, Part 2

Medical Astrology:  Sun in Aquarius Part 2 by Eileen Nauman, DHM, medical astrologer

    The lower leg consists of two bones, the tibia and the fibula.

Here are the major bones of our lower legs.

There’s an awful lot of muscles, too.  Probably the most common problem people will connect with is legs cramps.  Usually, this happens during the day from over exertion, not stretching before you exercise or run.  However, night leg cramping is a horse of a different color and I’ll cover that later in this blog.

Here are the muscles that are involved in shin splints.
This is a good illustration of the shin splint and where it can occur in the lower leg area.  Joggers, in particular, are prone to this issue.

    The most common leg complaint is known as Shin Splits.  There are two types.  The first is the pain felt in front of the tibia bone and is known as an anterior shin splint.  The posterior shin splint causes pain along the inside portion of the leg.  The main reason this conditions flares up on us is because of over use.  This condition usually occurs with die hard joggers.  But, it can be someone who is walking, too.  The pain (usually a dull ache at first)  is felt in the front or the inside of the tibia (also known as the shin bone).  The reason for it is over doing in the exercise department.  Athletes get this condition who run or jump a lot.   For the rest of us, we don’t set reasonable goals on our out-of-shape body and it is the shin bone muscles that starts screaming first.  And the symptoms will usually occur in a downhill portion of their walk or run.

Here are the major muscles of our calves.

    The tibia is the larger of the two bones in the lower leg and is sometimes referred to as the shinbone.  The smaller, thinner bone is called the fibula.  Both run from knee to our ankle.   The Tibia muscles allow our foot to bend upward.  There are many fibers that fasten the muscle to the bone of the tibia.  This covering is called the periosteum.

    With shin splints, if the person doesn’t rest or stop the repetitions or lower the miles jogged, real damage can be caused to the tibilius muscles that are attached to our tibia.  Worse, the edge of the muscles may begin to pull away from the bone.  Then, the muscle and the periosteum become inflamed.

For athletes, shin splints occur when there are increases in training regimen.  You can also acquire shin splints if your foot gear isn’t properly supportive.  If you have good footgear and are still getting shin splints, I’d strongly suggest you pop over and see a Podiatrist.  Not everyone’s foot is straight.  Indeed, many people walk “duck footed” or one foot will angle out instead of falling straight ahead as its supposed too.  An appointment with a podiatrist can never be underestimated.

    Anterior shin splints usually occur to joggers, sprinters or playing sports that require fast stops and starts (basketball, for example). The force and strain is placed on the anterior tibialis muscle.   This muscle’s job is to control the landing of our foot with each stride we take.   Downhill running really puts the stress on it and that is when you’re likely to feel the pain.

Here is an excellent illustration show where the shin splint occurs.

    If you make the mistake of jogging on the balls of your feet, you will quickly acquire an anterior shin splint.  The balls of our feet aren’t meant to take the pressure and force of a stride.
Learning to jog right might require you talking to a track coach and getting some useful instructions to avoid shin splints.

    If you get a posterior shin splint, it’s usually due to imbalance of the leg and foot.  Tight calf muscles can contribute.  Primary, however, is foot alignment (flat feet/flat arches also called pronation), can all cause this health issue.  The pain and inflammation will be felt along the inside edge of our lower leg.  Going to a Podiatrist is your first order of business and get the correct orthopedic devices so that it avoids this problem.

    Another condition is known as a Stress Fracture.  This is an actual breaking of a bone.  If you run on hard, unforgiving surfaces as in marathon or long time joggers who do many miles a day, you may suffer from this.  A stress fracture is a crack in the weakened area of a bone.  Unfortunately, people who start with shin splints think they can ‘work through’ the issue.  But in doing so, they may develop a stress fracture instead.  A far worse situation.

Here is an example of a stress fracture in the lower leg.

    A worse case scenario for shin splints is a condition known as Compartment Syndrome.  There are four compartments in the lower limb.  Pressure builds, muscle damage ensues and then swelling builds up inside a section (or compartment) of the leg.  The pressure builds the the capillaries (small artery-vein blood vessels) collapse and are squeezed shut.  When this happen, the muscles loose a badly need blood and oxygen supply.  At first, the symptoms are like an ache or may be mistaken for a muscle cramp.

If this condition persists undiagnosed, larger blood vessels are shut down as well as nerves are affected.  The person may feel coldness, numbness and swelling in lower leg (or foot).  If not treated, serious damage is done to that area.  Necrosis, or the tissue dying, is the worse case scenario.
.
    Dull, aching pain is felt where the involved tibialis muscle attaches to the tibia. Redness and swelling can also occur in this area. Tenderness is felt where the muscle attaches to the bone.

    Anterior shin splints are usually felt on the front of the tibia, especially when using the anterior tibialis muscle to bend your foot upward.

    Posterior shin splints produce symptoms along the inside edge of the lower leg. Small bumps may also be felt along the edge of the tibia in this area.

    Symptoms of shin splints generally get worse with activity and ease with rest. Pain may be worse when you first get up after sleeping. The sore tibialis muscle shortens while you rest, and it stretches painfully when you put weight on your foot.
periosteum (bony covering). This condition is called periostitis.

    Most shin splints will disappear if the person stops doing the physical activity.  You can use cold packs on the area.  Anti-inflammatory drugs are used, but I’d suggest homeopathic treatment instead.  Special support such as taping may support the shinbone to help the area heal.  A trip to the Podiatrist is in  order to ensure your feet are flat and in straight alignment with the rest of your body.  If they aren’t, shin splints can appear.  Orthotics (made by the podiatrist) are a way to get the foot in balance and also to support your arch.

    Going to a Physical Therapist can be equally important.  They know how to reduce pain and inflammation.  Surgery is rarely indicated.  Before you believe a doctor telling you surgery is inevitable, I hope you saw a Podiatrist first.

    Leg cramps are a common, shared experience.  Most of us get them when it’s a hot day out, we’re not drinking enough water and we’re physically active.  Dehydration can cause leg cramps and drinking water, resting and staying out of the direct sunlight can all ease that cramp.

    Another type is known as “Nocturnal Leg Cramps” or Night Cramps.  You may be just about asleep or sleeping when there’s sudden, excruciating pain (I call them Charley Horses) will bring you up screaming with pain.  Usually, they are in the lower leg, although they can occur in the upper leg as well.
Here are the muscles involved in cramps in general, whether experienced during the day or the night.

 The calf muscles are most often involved.  This type of cramping is usually harmless and suggests that our own local muscle chemistry is imbalanced.   Not drinking enough water can cause it.  Or, not eating foods that have potassium in them.   People who consume a lot of salt but not enough potassium via the foods they eat, are targets for night cramps.

    But there are other reasons, too.  Over exertion of the muscles, standing on hard surfaces for a long time, or sitting along time (getting up every 20 minutes is a good idea, if possible), maintaining a certain leg position for too long, dehydration (discussed above) or diseases.

    Diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, hypoglycemia, thyroid disorder (get lab tests every year to stay on top of whether you need more or less thyroid supplementation), and mineral imbalance (you may need more calcium, potassium or magnesium) or certain prescription medications (blood pressure meds, statins (that lower cholesterol), morphine and lithium) can be the hidden reason for your night cramps.

    If you continue to have night cramps on a consistent basis, please check with your health care provider and tell them what is going on.  If you are over age 50, have been over exerting yourself, if you’re pregnant, or if you stay in a certain position for along time, have flat feet or foot/ankle deformities (see a podiatrist on these), suffer from alcoholism, have a neurologic disease, can all be potential reasons for these night time cramps.  Homeopathy is stellar in this area and I’d also suggest along with your MD, to see a homeopath.  Many times, the correct remedy can correct the acute symptoms.

    Another less common problem for Aquarian's is the Weak Ankle situation.  In most instances, this is a genetic skeletal problem from birth onward.  Faulty skeleton creates poor posture and incorrect function.  This can create spinal instability in movement.  Unhappily, most of the population has some kind of skeletal insufficiency or imbalance.  It’s only a matter of time until it catches up with us.

Here is an illustration of the ankle and foot and how it is involved in "weak ankles."

    And usually, when we get active or start a gym exercise, this is when it will show up.  Inherited lower limb skeleton problems will excessively angle the foot connection with the ground.  You would think that when we walk, ALL of our foot, especially the last third, is in complete contact with the ground or surface we’re walking on.  Don’t put money on it.

Many people's feet do NOT hit the ground fully, especially the ball and toe area.  Here is an example, due to genetics, of the toes and ball hitting on the outer two toes and not the entire foot.  This condition creates an unstable spine.  And it can also make the hips "go out."  You will spend a lot of money on chiropractors getting your spine realigned constantly.  Or, the wise thing to do is visit your Podiatrist and let her or him check out your foot and create orthotics so your foot fully and completely hits the ground like it should.  Good-bye chiropractor bills!
When our feet do not fully connect with the ground, they 'roll' the entire ankle.  Here's a good illustration of how it happens.  See your podiatrist to cure this problem once and for all.

    This angled foot position (or the toe/ball portion of our foot) is angled.  It then results in a forceful foot roll.  The consequence is the ankle collapses (rolls out or in) and the lower leg turns forcefully.  If this continues on for any amount of time, wear and tear on the joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles are going to conspire against you.  Pain will be the result.  And your spinal column or hips “going out” so that you visit the chiropractor at least once a month to get realigned.

    Lastly, for Aquarian's, remember that STARCH is your ENEMY.  When the stomach is digesting and breaking down the food you just ate, the most amount of oxygen goes to breaking down the starches in it.  As more oxygen is allocated to the stomach for digestion, the Aquarian, about thirty to sixty minutes after that meal, feels very sleepy.  Most nap.  Or they should.  Actually, they should really cut down on the amount of starches' in their diet.  Yes, I mean breads and pastas, specifically.  Potatoes too.  And I know, Aquarian's are fixed eaters and trying to add something to their pallet or take it off is nearly impossible.  Good luck.

    Let me put a bug in your ear, Aquarius.  Do you want to become obese starting in your forties?  Well, you’re headed there unless you can swear off the starches, my friend.  Add more veggies and fruits to your diet instead.  Stay away from wheat products (many Aquarians have an allergy to wheat or wheat products and should look for “gluten free” items instead.  Make a friend of your health food store.
All you fixed signs of Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius--do you want to end up like this?  Well, you can.  Starch is your enemy.  My advice is switch to gluten and wheat-free food.  Scorpio is the least likely go obese.  You are all four stuck in a rut when it comes to food.  Get away from the "meat-and-potatoes" mentality and add plenty of fruits and veggies to your meal.  Then, you won't end up like this poor chap.

    And, adding on to this, all fixed signs (Scorpio less so), are prone toward obesity for the very reasons above.  Taurus is the gormand and eats too much rich food.  Leo indulges and super sizes everything thing.  And Aquarius is a ‘meat-and-potato’ mentality where starch is king.  All these signs are obese-prone.  You’ve been warned.
